WOW! This post at JuffPulver.com gives me so much hope for the near future of mobile phones.
I’m not going to rehash the whole thing. But I’ll say this. I have a vested interest in mobile phone/mobile computing becoming more powerful in the near term. This is why I have high hopes for Google’s bid on a spectrum of wireless being vacated by analog TV going digital. And now in Jeff’s post, he is talking about another kind of new world mobile phone company. I’m going to keep my eye on Orange Israel.
The mobile phone company is dead, long live the mobile phone company.
Forbes has it at Forbes.com. The main points about this that I especially appreciate.
Google already successfully lobbied that whoever wins, an aspect of the spectrum will be open to other carriers.
Google, just by announcing this, is shaking up the wireless world. This is a good thing. As was discussed at RonAmok.com, I have been stuck in a Verizon cycle of needing to change my plan which brings it back to 2 years. I’m tired of the hold the wireless companies have on us and anything that can be done to erode that and bring the power back to us, I’m all for.
A continuation from the previous point. I own my phone. I don’t want Verizon to tell me what I can or can’t put on it. I pay for my data plan, and I don’t want Verizon to tell me what I can or can’t download and upload.
So best case scenario? Google’s involvement in this space revolutionized the wireless industry and I have the power again. More apps on my phone. Better apps on my phone. Better prices all around. Less of a stranglehold on service plans by the big wireless companies.
I recently had a Skype conversation with my friend Ron Ploof of RonAmok.com. He pointed me to a cool new site called BugLabs.net where you can build your hardware by piecing together the modules. From there you can get a chip or board designed to actually use in a product. I joked with Ron that Google could use this to make its gPhone. Apparently, I’m not the only one making that joke.
Now I happen across this site with pictures of buglabs mobile prototype kit they say could run Google’s newly acquired Android operating system running.
Trying something new… I’m posting a Seesmic post below, but I’m also transcribing it for the search engines.
Sup everyone, I was just sitting here flipping through some of the channels at Justin.tv. It really struck me, how many people are playing music through the web. I know it has been going on, it has been going on youtube for the longest time, people remixing videos, remixing content. There’s.. whatever the big company is that is suing Google right now. I can’t think of what it is… starts with a V. (hint: Viacom) Earlier this weekend, I was stinging along with a Johnny Cash song here on seesmic. Anyway, it really struck me that there is just no way to pull all this back in. It’s just going to continue and continue, you can’t pull it back. And I think in reality, for the companies that sell this and hold the copyrights to it, you don’t want to pull it back. I’ve gotten a lot of comments about Johnny Cash and people that like Johnny Cash. I love the remixes, I love the videos people make on youtube. I think they add a lot of value to that song or to that video clip or whatever they are doing with it. Just some thoughts. Thought I’d share. See you kids later. Been great talking with you. Bye Bye
Ok, so not the way I would write it out if I didn’t speak it first but, meh.
Also a follow up as of the writing of this video, thanks banannie:
