Eeepc

Not so long ago I picked up an Asus eeepc 900. And so far, me likey. I’m not going to say a lot about it now, just to say that it is great when on the move, has great battery life, and is a wonderful addition to my full size laptop.

As a side note, you may notice I am at a Starbucks, and now that I have switched over from the T-mobile wifi to the AT&T wifi, I can have multiple devices online on the same login. It is handling my two laptops and my N95 being connected. Big ups to ATT for that.

LinkedIn Advice from Uncle Jer

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I was just emailing with my friend Grace Buford. She is an independent musician. I gave her some advice about LinkedIn, and thought you might not be aware of how beneficial LinkenIn is. So I’m sharing the advice with you too. You’re welcome :)

From my email to Grace:

Yes indeed, LinkedIn is a fantastic place to make connections. And they happen randomly for me more then anything else. Right now I’m doing a months worth of Freelance web development from someone who found me on LinkedIn. I also had a job interview recently from someone that randomly found me on LinkedIn.

People are on here fore all sorts of reasons. So I’m SURE you can find purpose in it as well. The first step is make a connection with everyone you know. LinkedIn will search your gmail and other mail webmail clients. You can also go through people’s contact lists that you already know. I’m sure my list has a lot of people you already know. And it just spiders out from there. A bit tedious in the beginning, but once it is set up, it is just maintaining it and keeping the information up to date.

As for as real concrete opportunities. LinkedIn is the best social network on the internet. It is for, and used by, professionals. Not just high schoolers and college students and the New Media regulars.

And now, just like Grace, you know too!

Google Reader vs. NewsGator

Friday, June 15th, 2007

I just finished reading Chris Brogan’s ‘Use Google Reader to Blaze News‘. About a month ago I saw a video from Robert Scoble on PodTech describing how he uses Google Reader. Perhaps about 6 months ago I was researching all of the web based aggregators and among the folks I talked to was Eric Rice who also suggested Google Reader at that time. However, I decided to go with NewsGator because they had a mobile version, even though I had to pay money for it, it was important that I had that.

Fast forward back to now. I can’t say it was Brogan’s post that convinced me, but everyone added together, and the realization that although I liked NewsGator, it took me forever to go through my blogs. (and you can probably blame Brogan on my even realizing that fact). So I have just made the switch to Google Reader. They now have a mobile edition which they didn’t back in the day, and bottom line, it is fast. Add to it the Smart Subscribe feature from the Better Google Reader Firefox extension I found on LifeHacker.

So there it is, I made a step in the right direction of being more productive by switching to Google Reader from NewsGator.

Analyzing Workflow pt. 1

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

I’ve decided to run a series on analyzing my workflow. As I began this, I decided to make sure I was using the correct meaning of the word workflow. My first stop, Miriam Websters Dictionary, didn’t have a definition at all. However, Dictionary.com had a nice range of definitions from multiple sources, and of course there is always Wikipedia. So the bottom line? Workflow means what you want it to mean, but to me, it means the things I use in my daily life to accomplish things. Mostly, this means how information flows and how it comes to me. So in this series, I’m specifically thinking about social media, but will cover anything that I feel needs to be covered.

If you find this, and you have suggestions of workflow items you use, comment on them so I can aggregate them here.

Things that come to mind immediately:
* gmail
* IRC
* Twitter
* Blogs
* Podcasts
* Video Podcasts
* Office documents
* Google
* Metaverse
* txt messages
* phone
* Flickr
* onXiam.com
* IMs
* Del.icio.us
* Digg
* Slashdot
* LinkedIn
* MySpace
* Skype
* Technorati
* Wikipedia
* YouTube
* PMOG
* Amazon.com
* Ebay

This is just a quick list I thought of off the top of my head, I’m sure it will be altered, I’m sure some things overlap each other. Well, I was going to start with my first one, but this ended up being a aggregation of what I am going to talk about, but that’s ok. :-)
