Interesting things I’ve heard at Blogworld 2010: Day 1

by Jeremy Vaught

I’m currently here at Blogworld. And I’m hearing a lot of great stuff, so I want to put it down on paper (so to speak) here.

Scott Stratten@unmarketing

  • “People spread awesome”
  • “Social Media is talking”
  • “I was either Mensa or Mental”
  • “It’s not my job to tell people how to consume my product, I just want them to consume it.”
  • “Be mobile”
  • CRO – Chief Relationship Officer
  • “Tweet 3-5 great things a day, plan them out”
  • “Do you market to people? Social Media is people.”
  • “When you are your authentic self, you have no competition”

Jay Baer & Amber Naslund

  • “Answer the new phone” – Companies used to answer a phone, some still do. Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc are the new phone.
  • 3 levels of listening (it’s a infographic in the new book, really interesting)
  • Areas of possible Social Media engagement:
    • Awareness of your product or brand
    • Sales
    • Loyalty

Which of those three are you going to focus on. Suggest it is loyalty in most situations.

Brian Solis‘ Interview of Mark Burnett

  • “Survivor is ‘The Lord of The Flies’” – This never occurred to me
  • “The Need to be certain causes paralysis”
  • “The need to be certain is a form of procrastination”
  • “Be willing to jump in and take a risk”
  • “The People who do big things don’t know, are uncertain, if it’s going to work”
  • “Social Media is the electronic water-cooler”
  • “Alaska is epic, and I’ve traveled the world”

Doug Ulman – @livestrongceo

  • “We are just getting started”
  • Nike, who created the LiveStrong wristbands, had originally decided to put “Just Do It” on each one, then decided to go with “LiveStrong” with a Nike Swoosh, but after the first 5 thousand (5 million in total were made) they took off the swoosh so that it could be even bigger.
  • Both Lance Armstrong and Phil Knight thought that the wristband was a horrible idea. Which of course, they were both wrong.
