Insurance required to take pictures in NYC?

Friday, June 29th, 2007

I must admit, I don’t really get it. Require a permit and insurance to take pictures and film in New York City? The article is on the online New York Times.

The article says that the casual photographer won’t need to get the permit, but I’m at a loss as to why the city is doing this. But I wanted to get this out there since I am out the door and can’t read up on it more right now.

Lemon Cake that Jeremy likes

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

When I was in high school in Ketchikan, Alaska, I had a girlfriend, Jill. Her mother, Rita Spoelstra, made this awesome Lemon Cake. I liked it so much my mom asked her for the recipe. Well, I am at my mom’s right now, and I came across this recipe, and thought I would share it with all my closest friends :-) (incidentally, this is also a test of my mobile scanner and photoshopping skills)

Here is what the recipe card says:

Recipe for: Lemon Cake that Jeremy likes
From: Rita Spoelstra

1 lemon cake mix
1 cup water
3 eggs
3 oz. pkg. lemon jello
1/2 cup oil

Mix all together and bake 40 minutes at 350°. Frost immediately when taken from oven with glaze made of powdered sugar and lemon juice.

Enjoy! And let me know how it turns out.

Looking for a new opportunity

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Hey folks, I’m just laying it straight out there. I’m a looking for a new opportunity. (this is fancy speak for a job) I have some ideas for starting my own thing, but I’m not convinced I’m ready to jump at doing my own startup yet. So if you have a moment, allow me to tell you about myself.

My last job, I was a Project Manager / Producer for the Electric Sheep Company. In resume speak, this is what I did:

Held the position of Project Manager overseeing the corporate builds in the virtual world of Second Life. Successfully ran multiple short and long term projects simultaneously. Participated in all stages of a project, including the creative design stage with the client, conception of the idea, and execution of the launch. Worked closely with the clients to convey their needs to the builders and scripters. Managed time frame, scope, and budget of the project to insure that the client’s expectations were being met. Even though I worked remotely, I was easily able to communicate with clients by using basecamp, phone calls, emails, and Instant Messages. Mediated between clients and creative teams when conflicts arose and resolved all discrepancies.

Before that I was a PHP Software Engineer for Fidelity National Financial. What I did:

As the sole corporate PHP developer, I created and maintained dynamic web sites and databases. I initially had to build my entire development environment and managed full implementation from development to deployment. In the course of my job, I initiated, planned, and executed every aspect of my projects. I effectively organized the budget, time line and scope of projects by maintaining communication with clients and providing appropriate documentation and deliverables.

Before that I worked 8 years at UPS doing all kinds of things. Let me tell you about what I did most:

District Software Engineer
Created applications to assist operations and management to complete tasks which were time consuming and provide valuable, timely information. I used VB.NET, SQL, VB6, and MSAccess to accomplish this.

Technology Support Technician
Troubleshot and resolved problems with networks, PCs, and applications both on site and at a regional help desk. Additionally I lead project teams to implement and upgrade new technology solutions integral to UPS’ core business.

Supervisor
Provided leadership for group of operations employees as a Supervisor. Skills include relationship building, time management, job assignment, job skill development, evaluations, and mediation.

In even more resume speak, allow me to talk about what I have done outside of the box called a job:

I started blogging in 2003 and continue to do so now. I started creating and producing podcasts in late 2005, and since have been asked to contribute to many other podcasts besides my own, including the creation, implementation and production of a podcast for a major triathlon website.

I joined the virtual world of Second Life in April 2006, and have since become more and more involved in the expansion of Second Life and the metaverse as a whole. I also explore and investigate other virtual worlds, from Kaneva, There.com, and Entropia Universe to IMVU and Habbo Hotel and more.

I am very passionate about new media and the new marketing ventures that come as a result of new media. Something I have always enjoyed is meeting and talking with leaders in new media. I have been a member of the Orange County Podcasters and participated with them at last year’s Portable Media Expo. I am currently in the Social Media Club in Phoenix and the Arizona Podcasters Group. I also am currently organizing Podcamp Arizona.

I have successfully forged many friendships in the social media community, and look forward to continue to network with people in this exciting field.

I have excellent investigative and communication skills and put them to use in all my ventures including new media and learning ways to enhance it, consume it, create content in it, and spread it to a wider audience.

And finally, in case you were curious, I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Devry University.

Google Reader vs. NewsGator

Friday, June 15th, 2007

I just finished reading Chris Brogan’s ‘Use Google Reader to Blaze News‘. About a month ago I saw a video from Robert Scoble on PodTech describing how he uses Google Reader. Perhaps about 6 months ago I was researching all of the web based aggregators and among the folks I talked to was Eric Rice who also suggested Google Reader at that time. However, I decided to go with NewsGator because they had a mobile version, even though I had to pay money for it, it was important that I had that.

Fast forward back to now. I can’t say it was Brogan’s post that convinced me, but everyone added together, and the realization that although I liked NewsGator, it took me forever to go through my blogs. (and you can probably blame Brogan on my even realizing that fact). So I have just made the switch to Google Reader. They now have a mobile edition which they didn’t back in the day, and bottom line, it is fast. Add to it the Smart Subscribe feature from the Better Google Reader Firefox extension I found on LifeHacker.

So there it is, I made a step in the right direction of being more productive by switching to Google Reader from NewsGator.

Jean-Ann Mills (Jane Calvert in Second Life) was on awesome on the national show, The Morning Show, on Fox. The clip is 20 minutes, so it is in two parts. Check it out below.

NBC.com and Social Networking

Friday, June 1st, 2007

You can see what I’m talking about at http://www.nbc.com/Social_Networking. I don’t troll the networks websites at all, but I heard that the TV show Heroes can be seen online, I’ve never seen the show, so I thought I would check it out, and found their soon to be Social Networking page. It boasts Personalized Profiles, Buddies, Video Galleries, Photo Galleries, Blogs, Groups, Message Boards, and Widgets. Clearly these are all things that need to happen, actually all things that should have happened already. But no time to improve like the present I guess.

After poking around a little bit, I did find that they have a list of current blogs here. Now as a person that doesn’t watch TV on a TV, most of these blogs are cryptic. “Andrea’s Blog - The Biggest Loser” Who is Andrea? Is she a fan? Is she on the show? Is she the producer? “Pale Man’s Blog - Paleforce” Is Paleforce the name of a TV show? Is it a show about a platoon of killer albino rabbits? Paleforce?… goofy name. [of course I've probably shot myself in the foot and made myself look like an idiot for not looking it up, such is life]

Ok, so I clicked on the Paleforce blog to see what I could find out, and see what type of stuff is being blogged about. Here is the 3rd entry down:

February 13, 10:49 PM
Happy Valentine’s Day

Dear Friends of Pale,

My Valentine wish to you is that you open your heart to your inner paleness - and beg the media to stop talking about Anna Nicole Smith.

- Jim

Now that is quality reading. Clearly this show is absolute sillyness and that is what the blog must be reflecting. At least they allow comments. So it is not totally worthless.

Conclusion:

  • Good on ya’ NBC for adding these features to your website.
  • Maybe they will even improve the current blogging.
  • One of my favorite aspects of watching Lost on ABC is the official podcast, and that is not on this list for NBC. It should be.
