Paul McCartney ain’t old school

Monday, May 28th, 2007

In a post from the New York Times today, I learned that Paul McCartney gets it. I hear more and more musicians doing it, and before long more and more will continue. I’m talking about giving up on the antiquated music business.

So in a nutshell, here is what Paul has done. So he has not entirely given up on the music industry, he is making huge progress. He has signed up with Starbucks which has its own music distribution company, and have proven to actually sell large amounts of music. The other thing he is doing is releasing his video on You Tube.

If you are looking for more information on a band that gets it as far as it can be got, check out the Bare Naked Ladies. A quick look over their site reveals Revver and YouTube videos including the awesome ‘Bathroom series’ which you can watch on the website, on YouTube, or get on your mobile phone. And I’m not even talking about their podcast or putting out a 29 song album on a thumb drive and other brilliant ways to distribute music. Ok, you caught me, I’m a fan. I’ve been a fan of the Chickity China, the Chinese Chicken for a long time now, and to see them lead the way in how they connect with fans and distribute music, makes me doubly a fan.

Also, since we on are this subject, if this is a topic you enjoy, I strongly suggest to go to Griddlecakes Radio and listen to this spoof on the RIAA.

Sony’s superthin screen

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

You can find the story at lifeleak.com. Sony calls it a tv, but teeveeschmeevee, it is a screen, and I have have been looking forward to this since my monstrous CRT on my first computer. The possibilities of this fascinate me. I imagine not only the usefulness, but also the visual of an Arnold Schwarzenegger futuristic movie that is like Time Square on caffeine.

I’m looking forward to this technology improving and the screen as we know it largely becoming a thing of the past.

At least we have the mess in common.

Being stuck and the art of creating content

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

I’m stuck… I’ve not been blogging or podcasting. I don’t think I’m in a rut, I think I’m just overwhelmed. I am looking for a job, and I am trying to get my kids back, two things that are quite stressful. However, aren’t we all busy? I twittered about a month ago, I said:

Arrived at DFW, decided on the plane I don’t take enough risks… even the silly ideas could end up awesome, or spark it

And I have been thinking of this again. Partly inspired by those out there doing just that. CC Chapman with One Guy’s Thoughts, Chris Pirillo with his ustream stuff, Justin.tv, the Chris’ (Penn and Brogan) with Podcamp, Eric Rice with Saijo City in Second Life, iJustine with Tasty Blog Snack, and many, many more.

For another example, I give you Irina Slutsky, she recently alerted me to the Vlog Deathmatch. I watched her video along with everyone else’s. Were most of them goofy? yep. Were most of them silly? yep. Were some of them good and entertaining? absolutely. Who lost out by doing this project and putting something out there? nobody!

All the folks I have mentioned above have moved to do something different. They are going out on a limb, they create content, and are forging new spaces. What do I do? Analyze. What should I be doing? I should be going out on a limb, I should be creating content, I should be forging new spaces. Sure I blog and I podcast from time to time, but I need to do more.

So this brings me to my next point. By creating content, even if some of it is lame, is this a negative thing? Sure, consistently bad content will drive folks away, but is it worse then not making any content at all? I’m thinking so.

New Media King

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

So I was trying to come up with tagline for my blog, and Mo Hax in Second Life helped me out. He posted a pic of me on Snapzilla, and his comment makes for a good tagline. Best of all, I can claim I didn’t say it. (Plausible Deniability) :-)

So from here on, I’m a King of New Media, and not, a ’self described’ King of New Media.

I take my simple pleasures where I can

UPDATE:
Mo apparently was prompted into saying I was a New Media King by the wonderful Jane Calvert.

PodCamp AZ meeting at the desired location

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

I met with Michelle and Brent Spore from TheCreationShop.com among other sites. We met with Darlene from Bentley Projects, which is where we intend to score a home run with an awesome PodCamp.

This location is simply awesome. Shies from being perfect, but still rates awesome. It is an old warehouse practically in downtown Phoenix that is currently being used as an art gallery. I did not see one piece that is worth less then about 125% of what I make in a month, and many of the pieces are worth much more. My favorite pieces were the red and white canvases, each worth $9,000, and by red and white I mean there were no other colors on the canvas. I told Brent and Michelle I think I need to become an artist. Anways, this building was a linen laundry since 1918 until 1999. This building has a lot of character.

So I thought I would mention some of the topics that we discussed today:
*Should we hold the podcamp 1 or 2 days? Looks like we will have a Friday night kickoff event.
*What about projectors? Are many presentors going to need them? How do we get them? Do we really need them?
*Sound systems… there is one built in for the main speaking area…. will the smaller groups need them? I’m thinking no.
*How long should each session be?
*There is an extra parking lot (that we will need), it rents out for $250 a day.
*This is an art gallery, so no attaching things to the wall, stay clear of the paintings.
*There are only two restrooms, and each one is the one at a time kind… do we need more?
*How many people do we figure are going to come to this thing anyways?
*There is a cool projection room, Brent think we should get video podcasters to submit an example of their work, and we can display it in this video room, it is not good for anything else really.
*Lunch? There is a small restaurant on location, but could only handle about 100 premade lunches. Just have folks try to take lunch throughout the day? Bring it in?
*The building will require a deposit of 50% to reserve the day.
*We are thinking of holding the event from 9 to 5 on Saturday… registration opens at 8, out the door by 6. Still considering Sunday… everything costs money
*Looks like 6 smaller meeting rooms, and one large main one.
*There is an area for sponsor booths… should we even have that?
*There is no wifi or internet of any kind… we need to get that sponsored.
*There are a few sponsors looking to pay for the building…. we need to get that done.
*How many are going to be coming anyway? Wait, did I already say that?
*Dan from the Love Long and Prosper podcast mentioned in our first meeting that he would like to have an area where podcasters can sign up for a slot and do a show, live, streamed, and in your face. We have a place for that.

Ok, there was my braindump… now I can make room for moving forward.
